Every business wants more customers and there is a monetary value for each new customer they get. For many, you can literally get paid for sending someone to a website/ app where they sign up for an account.

Why would you do this?

With lots of businesses, when a friend of yours signs up as a customer you will both receive some form of compensation. Sometimes, it simply isn’t worth the amounts that you will receive but this can be very rewarding. For example, Nationwide and TSB have both famously used ‘refer-a-friend’ scheme where both you and your friend would receive £100.

These bank referrals have not been re-introduced since Covid, but are great examples of how referral schemes can benefit you greatly.

Is it a scam?

No, not at all. There are lots of companies that will put on lots of offers where you sign up to earn ‘points’ which you will never be able to trade in for cash. They will then probably send you several emails every single day. Never sign up for companies which you don’t trust even if there is a reward, because chances are it’s not actually worth the fuss.
